Cuphead - Game of the Week

My game of the Cuphead, it'll have you hooked and feeling determined to beat it but it's sure is a stressful ride!

Overview

Cuphead is a classic run and gun action game heavily focused on boss battles. Inspired by cartoons of the 1930s, the visuals and audio are painstakingly created with the same techniques of the era, i.e. traditional hand drawn cel animation, watercolor backgrounds, and original jazz recordings.

Gameplay

There are various types of levels within this game but I'd say my favourite and the most enjoyable is the platforming battles. This is where you'll see some of the weirdest most hilarious challenges which will force you to think differently to overcome them. You'll also have to consider not only controlling yourself but in some cases moving platforms.

One thing you will notice and it'll annoy some but I liked it was you have no sense of how much health the enemies have as there is no indicator to tell you even when your goes to that final takeout. It seems intentional though as it allows for fewer distractions on screen and the style of the game to be enjoyed.

Unlockables

Throughout the game, you'll find that there are unlockable shot types, extra abilities, and super moves. These are great in helping you to solve the most difficult levels and that one hard boss that keeps beating you. Don't be fooled though these aren't upgrades and in some cases, you'll find that one is a lot more useful than another.

Style

Outstanding 1930s style with watercolour backgrounds and hand-drawn animations, I don't think I've ever played a game that feels quite as traditional.

Final Thoughts

You're going to love, hate, love than hate again with this game all in one session. With its fantastic art style, fun gameplay but challenging boss battles it's a tough one to master and a sure stressful challenge.
